Perry is the daughter of actors Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. On the ABC sitcom Roseanne (as seen by flashback), her mother played Jackie Harris in two of Perry's first TV roles. Her parents, however, did not let her perform until she was an adult due to the effects stress would have on their daughter. Perry states that she did not want to perform in high school, but she decided to begin acting as a social activity while at Northwestern University when she switched to the university from Boston University. When she graduated, Perry relocated into New York to search for jobs on television, landing small parts in series like Law & Order: Criminal Intent however, her homesickness led the actress back to California where she found theater work. Perry performed with her mom as part of The Other Place at Broadway the previous year. In 2015, she performed with her father and Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning film Anna Christie in the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. Perry played a role in 9 episodes of the ABC thriller The Family in 2016. In 2017, Perry had the role of a political thriller Scandal along with her father. In the same year, she was cast as the younger version of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) on Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again portraying a younger model of the mother's role. She was cast in the role in spite of her strong relationship with the character's family.
